5 Reasons to Love Loo ...

1. Loo is always there for you.

2. Loo respects your privacy.

3. Loo does not judge.

4. Loo inspires a feeling of lightness and well-being.

5. What happens in the Loo, stays in the Loo.

Blog author disclaimer: OK, technically #5 does not really happen, since modern plumbing – as most of us know it – efficiently takes care of any business that is left, um, behind.

Can toilets be sexy?

While this may not be the most glamorous of blog posts, no one can deny that without the luxury of the loo, every day life would certainly be a lot less comfortable. And even in its most basic form, minus the extras that increase its level of lets just say efficiency, a toilet is the one fixture most of us could not imagine living without.

When nature calls ...

So why all this potty talk, you may ask? Well, I have been made aware that tomorrow is World Toilet Day. Why is this peculiar date on the calendar blog-worthy? Lets put this sensitive subject in perspective ...

Have you ever gone camping in the  wilderness and had to rely on less then amenable facilities?

Have you ever traveled to another area or country where sanitation standards are not what you are accustomed to?

Have you ever been affected by a natural disaster that disabled your indoor plumbing?

Have you ever spent an entire day without access to a toilet? How about a lifetime?

Can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em.

If you have ever been without a toilet for a day or more, it is not difficult to understand the value in having access to this very special room of ones own. For privacy, for dignity, for personal health and well-being.

To know them is to love them.

Did you know that the invention of the toilet has actually saved more human lives than any other invention in history? Did you know that 2.5 billion people around the globe still do not have access to a toilet? And that illnesses that are a direct result of poor sanitation are the 2nd largest cause of death of children in developing countries? This is why World Toilet Day is important. Because toilets can save lives. And thats worth talking about. The goal of World Toilet Day is to create an environment where sanitation needs can be discussed openly and honestly. By opening this taboo topic up for discussion, we can find ways to work together to make life better for others.

4 Tips for a Better Showroom

1. SEEK INSPIRATION

“At Designer Bath and Salem Plumbing Supply, one of our primary goals each year is to attend the major kitchen and bath association shows. Recently we attended the DPHA (Decorative Plumbing and Hardware Association) conference in Chandler, Arizona. These annual meetings create an opportunity to touch and feel the newest and unequaled products from leading manufacturers.”

– Ralph Sevinor, Designer Bath and Salem Plumbing Supply

Below are some of the newly introduced products on display at the DPHA showcase. You just may see some of them in our own showroom in the near future ...

elegant alternative to the timeless farmhouse apron front sink

Victoria +Albert Drayton: a traditional tub with a modern vibe

Victoria + Albert Staffordshire Collection:
Victorian style vessels with coordinating faucet levers

Modern legs on a vanity console designed for small spaces

2. SHARE INFORMATION

Being a member of the Decorative Plumbing and Hardware Association has been very valuable for us as a family-owned business in the decorative plumbing category. The mission of the DPHA is to help its members create the best showroom experience for all, paired with the most innovative products on the market. Their goal is to educate their professional members while offering “guidelines for consumers to make better and well-informed purchasing decisions.”

Panel discussion with Mindy Sevinor-Feinberg at the
Decorative Plumbing and Hardware Association conference

During the DPHA conference, Mindy spoke on a panel that discussed Best Showroom Practices. As a young mom and homeowner, she has become quite a fan of Houzz, Pinterest and Instagram. She has also discovered that these platforms help her in the showroom as well.

Houzz, Pinterest and Instagram are great tools that help to shorten the sales cycle and enable us to service clients at a higher level. Immediately the client is able to paint us a picture of exactly what they are trying to achieve. Pictures are worth a thousand words!

Check out our idea books on Houzz where we feature local designers work along with many quality brands from our showroom. If you have done a project with us and have photos on Houzz, let us know so that we can add you to our idea books.

It is hard not to love Pinterest for instant inspiration and idea gathering! Our boards are a mix of our favorite brands and some fun looks at bath and kitchen design.

We have just started to use Instagram as @DesignerBath. We would love to see your favorite products from our showroom. Post a picture next time you visit us!

3. OFFER SOMETHING NEW

The DPHA conference was a time to explore opportunities for our business. I walked away energized about all the future possibilities. As a result of the conference, we’ll be adding a brand new faucet line to our offerings and expanding on several of our existing lines. I’m confident each will be a huge hit with our customers. Our industry is moving faster than ever. It’s critical decorative showrooms keep up with trends and all the innovation this great industry has to offer. DPHA helps us do that so we can offer our customers the very best.

Seriously, who can resist a cute little puppy? If you prefer adorable babies, we have one of those, too, in our new TV spot. Check it out here. We all love to share pretty pictures (follow us on Pinterest to see more), but at Designer Bath and Salem Plumbing Supply we also love water, and we care about how our customers experience water on a daily basis.

Find true love on Pinterest

Are you on Pinterest? If you are considering a home remodel project for 2013, this is a great site to use as a way to discover what you really love. Besides being able to follow the boards of interior designers, shelter magazines, style curators and home decor businesses, Pinterest allows you to easily save and categorize the design images and ideas that appeal to you most. After pinning photos of glass tiles and soaking tubs over and over again to your inspiration boards, you can be pretty confident that incorporating both in your next project will create a look you could live with for years to come.

By sourcing design ideas online, you will be able to quickly identify the look and feel of your dream bath. Whether you covet a glamorous and sleek modern bath, or a simple and relaxed space suggestive of country charm, your boards will visually help you to narrow down your bath must-haves.

Once you have a good idea of what you love, set up an appointment with one of our design consultants. Before you even come into the showroom, you can request that the consultant check out your likes on Pinterest so that you are both on the same page. Its a great way to quickly get started in the right direction towards achieving your personal version of a what a designer bath should look like.

We are big fans of Pinterest and have started a number of boards that feature our favorite looks for the bath and kitchen. We also have a shared board with our local Passport to Design partners. Check it out to see what is new and on trend in our showrooms. And if you have designed a bath featuring fixtures from our showroom, tag your images with #mydesignerbath. Wed love to see them!

In the showroom with Mindy

Mindy Sevinor-Feinberg

Mindy’s grandfather, William Sevinor, opened the doors to Salem Plumbing Supply over 65 years ago. Today, she is an important member of the Designer Bath showroom consulting team (although she certainly grew up “in the business” with dad, Ralph, at the helm since she was a little one).

For the past few years, Mindy has applied her former skills as an elementary school teacher (she is extremely organized and explains complicated subject matter with ease) to help her customers make design decisions. I decided it was time to give Mindy a pop quiz ...

What are customers looking for today?
Customers seem to be asking for more transitional products in terms of style. I believe I am selling more vanities lately and customers often care for a furniture style look over the cabinet look. I think a great example of this is the Fairmont Designs Shaker Style Open Shelf Vanity.

What are some brands that customers are taking home from the showroom lately?

IN THE KITCHEN:
For kitchen faucets people seem to really appreciate the eco-feature that Hansa offers with the ECO Control Cartridge.

Altmans on display at Designer Bath

FOR THE BATH: Altmans. Even though we have only had them for a short time, it appears there is something for everyone.

One of Mindys favorites from our showroom:

What are some of your showroom favorites?

Bourdeaux Vanity Console by Stone Forest. I love the classic look that will never go out of style, plus it offers a large bowl that gives you plenty of function. People love it!

MTI also is picking up steam in terms of many great free standing tub styles and beautiful shower bases.

DornbrachtIMO shower series is really sleek looking, too.

What is one of your favorite new items in the showroom and what do you like about it?

The Robern wall mount. I love that this is a great modern way to offer storage, it provides a receptacle plug, and the unit can be recessed. Aren’t we always looking for more storage? I have one in my home and I love it. It even comes with an optional 7" diameter magnifying mirror that can be attached to the inside of the door, which is very handy when applying make-up and for personal grooming.

The other item I love is the Julien kitchen sink with the offset drain. Customers love that it offers a larger work surface area with the right adjusted drain while offering more storage underneath the sink as your p trap/disposal is out of the way.

How do you help customers make decisions when there is so much to choose from?
I try to simplify the process as much as possible by breaking it down by room and stages for lack of a better word  (i.e. items that take up the most square footage – tubs, vanities, etc. first – fixtures after I get an idea for style and budget). I use my knowledge to guide them, keep the process simple and efficient, and help them to make the best decisions that suit their needs. Even though there are tons of choices, if we break it down to a tub, vanity, faucet, etc. it’s easy to lead them in the right direction after listening to their needs and desires.

How do you help customers work within a budget?
I try to provide a good, better, best option in terms of pricing. I also give them information as to why one product may be more then another and what benefits they would get. Typically there is a reason why one product is more expensive then another beyond design. By giving them the benefits it helps them to decide if that is value added.

What do you like most about your position?
Working with wonderful clients that share a piece of their lives with us, as well as having the opportunity to work with my family (dad Ralph, brother Jason, and aunt Dale).

Mindy, Lyla and Jared

When not in the showroom, Mindy enjoys time with her husband, Jared, and their young daughter, Lyla. She loves to travel and volunteers internationally. Mindy is a fan of online decorating resource sites Houzz and Pinterest. Stop by and say hello to her the next time you visit Designer Bath, or set up an appointment to go over the details of your next project.

Show us your Designer Bath

Is there a bathroom in your home in need of updating, but you are just in the “wish list” stage? Are you tired of looking at dated tile from the ’50s or His & Hers avocado sink basins? Are you constantly pinning vintage tubs to your mood boards on Pinterest? If you could design a bath to reflect your personal vision today, what would it look like? We would love to see which items from our showroom would be your top picks for a new bath. Would you include a steam shower? A touchless faucet? A classic marble vanity? We want to know!

Post your design favorites and be entered

Happy designing : )
